The colours have not moved. The type has. And there is now exactly one script on this site. Here is what it does, and what it will never do.
What changed
Three things. Headlines are now set in Instrument Serif, a display serif, where they used to be a heavy grotesque. The home page and this blog carry a moving background: the site's signature wave, drawn large and slow. And lesson pages have a firmer frame around them — a course bar at the top, larger step numerals, a proper card for the next lesson.
Body text is still Inter. Labels and the wordmark are still IBM Plex Mono, and the green cursor still blinks. The palette has not changed at all.
The wave, and a same-day correction
The moving background is this site's signature mark, drawn large and slow: an analogue wave that becomes a square wave, ink turning green at the handover. That mark has been in the footer of every page since the start. It is the whole idea of the site in one line — a smooth, human signal learning to speak digital — so the motion belongs to the brand rather than being decoration laid on top.
An honest note: the first version of this background, live for part of a day, was a field of dithered dots. It was too loud. It went the same day, and this paragraph is the record of that, because corrections here get published rather than quietly edited.
The one script
Until today this site ran no JavaScript anywhere, and said so. That rule has been traded, deliberately, for one script with two jobs: drawing the wave, and stepping the row of blog cards on the home page when you press an arrow. The trade comes with terms, and they are published here so you can hold me to them:
- It reads nothing about you, stores nothing, and sends nothing anywhere.
- It is around two kilobytes, served from this site, from no third party.
- With scripts switched off the page is plain paper, the blog cards move by ordinary scrolling, and you lose nothing.
- If your device asks for reduced motion, it draws one still frame and stops.
- It stays the only script. A second one needs a reason this page would have to explain.
What did not change
No cookies. No tracking. No account, ever. Every lesson free, none behind a wall. Square corners, no icons, no stock photos. The privacy and accessibility pages have been rewritten to describe the script honestly rather than pretending the site is still script-free.
